The railways 'opened up' the west ..thousands of Chinamen were employed to blast the way though the mountains ..hundreds died on the job..dismayed Indian watched and sometimes halted the progression of the metal, steam emitting giants...but not for long. By the end of the 19th century, the Indian tribes and the buffalo herds were practically annihilated.
